Khajuraho- The Temple City

Situated in Chhatarpur of Madhya Pradesh, Khajuraho speaks volume about its artistic expression that has been beautifully carved into sculptures. The term 'Khajuraho' has been derived from the Sanskrit word 'Khajur' meaning 'Date Palms'. It houses the remarkable temples that belong to the medieval Hindu and Jain period. History

Khajuraho is widely known for its temples. Built by the Chandel rulers, these temples were in great numbers. The temples date back to 950 AD and 1150 AD. Among 80 temples, now hardly 25 remain in good condition. Chausath Yogini, Lalgun Mahadev, Varaha, Lakshman, Parshwanath, Devi Jagadambi and Chitragupta are the famous ones.

Chitragupta Temple

This is an ancient shrine, which is dedicated to Lord Surya. It faces eastwards to the rising sun. The temple dates back to 11th century. It enshrines an imposing 5 ft high idol of Lord Surya in a standing position, driving a chariot of seven horses. The temple houses an old three-storied stepped tank, which is known as 'Chopra'.


Devi Jagdambi Temple

It is eulogized for passionately carved figures. A tiny temple is adorned with few premium figurines at Khajuraho. The Garbhagriha of this beautiful shrine shelters a big image of the goddess of the Universe. It showcases a stunning image of Goddess Parvati along with Mithuna.


Kandariya Mahadev Temple

It is the largest temple in Khajuraho, built in around 1025-1050 AD. This is sandstone structure, dedicated to Shiva with a linga. The main shrine is adorned with more than 800 images. The architecture encompasses ardha mandapa and a maha mandapa. The tower is about 100 ft high, which makes it a spectacular temple.


Vaman Temple

It is a beautiful temple, devoted to Lord Vaman, the dwarf lord. The temple belongs to the eastern group of temples. Located north of the Khajuraho village, the temple offers a gorgeous sight of a lush greenery as its background. The temple architecture consists of a sanctum, an atrium, a single spire 'Shikhara' and a 'Maha-Mandap'.

Shilpgram

Established in the year 1998, the place beckons art-lovers to witness the wonderful performances of folk arts. Positioned at the heart of Khajuraho, Shilpgram is a government run cultural centre.Tourists can enjoy the entertaining performances of classical as well as folk dancers. It also boasts of the art of the craftsmen from different corners of India.


Panna National Park

Located at a distance of around 57 km from Khajuraho, Panna national park is among the most famous tiger reserves in India. It provides shelter to wild cats, tigers, deer and antelopes.

Dhubela Museum, The Pandav Waterfall, Benisagar Lake and Ranguan Lake are other popular excursions from Khajuraho.


Fairs and Festivals


Mahashivratri

It is among the important festivals of Khajuraho that marks the wedding of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Celebrated in March, the festival continues with the worshiping of both the deities.


Shilpgram

Khujaraho Dance Festival

The festival marks the spectacular dance and music performances by the eminent Indian classical dancers. It is held in February or March.

Khajuraho is a good place if you wish to try some typical cuisine of Madhya Pradesh. Cashew barfi, moong dal ka halwa, jalebi, lavang latika and sabudana ki khichadi are among the most favourite ones.
