Renowned as Tharpa Ling or the place of freedom, Lamayuru monastery is the oldest and the largest in the Ladakh region. According to the legends, Lamayuru was a lake. It is a complex of buildings with shrines dedicated to different Gods and incarnation of Lord Buddha. At the outset the monastery consisted of 5 buildings out of which only the central one exists today.
Highlights of the place
The monastery is famous for its rich wall paintings, murals, scriptures and statues of various forms of Buddha and other deities. There are several legends about the monastery.
The annual festival known as Yuru Kabgyat is a major attraction of the monastery. Mask dance by the Lamas are the highlight of the festival. Another important ritual followed here is the burning of effigies which stands for destruction of ego in an individual.
Best time to Visit
The best time to visit the place is from April to June.
There are not many hotels in Lamayuru Monastery but for traveler's convenience, there are a few options: Hotel Niranjana, D'zojilla hotel and Hotel Siachen to name a few.

By Air: Leh is the nearest airport directly connected to major cities.
By Rail: Kalka is the nearest railway station.
By Road: The monastery can be reached by road via Leh through 2 popular routes- from Srinagar and from Manali.
