Introduction

Kargil town located on the Srinagar -Leh highway is the 2nd largest urban centre of Ladakh. Kargil once served as the important trade centre in the Pan Asian trade network. The name of Kargil has been derived from the combination of two words Khar standing for Castle and rKil meaning centre. The name of the region is perfect as far as its location is concerned, which is between two countries.

Highlights of the Place

Trespone and Sankhoo are the 2 Imambaras found here. These Turkish style buildings have Persian and Arabic speaking Muslim Aghas. Kargil Muslims are known for their extreme orthodoxy.

Sani monastery is the major attraction here - it is one of the oldest religious sites in Ladakh and Zanskar.
Kargil also serves as an important base for adventure tours and trekking.

The place is also popular for its Buddhist monuments. A famous Buddhist sculpture of the Laughing Buddha is a major attraction at the Mulbekh Monastery.


Best Time to Visit

The summer season of April to September is the vest time to visit Kargil when the roads are opened.

    By Air: The nearest airport to Kargil is at Srinagar at a distance of 204 km.


    By Rail: The nearest railhead is at Jammu at a distance of 540 km.


    By Road: One can hire a Jeep Taxi or Car to reach Kargil while Mini coach is another option. Regular buses also ply from Srinagar and Leh.
