Kargil town located on the Srinagar -Leh highway is the 2nd largest urban centre of Ladakh. Kargil once served as the important trade centre in the Pan Asian trade network. The name of Kargil has been derived from the combination of two words – Khar standing for Castle and rKil meaning centre. The name of the region is perfect as far as its location is concerned, which is between two countries.

Kargil also serves as an important base for adventure tours and trekking.
The place is also popular for its Buddhist monuments. A famous Buddhist sculpture of the Laughing Buddha is a major attraction at the Mulbekh Monastery.
