Situated at an altitude of 2024 m above sea level, Patnitop is a beautiful hill station located in Jammu and Kashmir. Among the lush green landscapes and dense forests, it is replete with breathtaking beauty. It provides nature's bounty away from the boisterous city life. The placidity and serenity of this region provides enjoyment of both beauty and adventure.
Patnitop is a distortion of an original name 'Patan Da Talab' meaning Pond of the Princess. Legend says that a pond existed in the meadows and a princess used to bathe there. Some of the pond still exists; over the years the name has changed to Patnitop.
Located at a distance of around 5 km from the town, the region remains covered in thick blankets of snow during winters. For skiing enthusiasts, this is a must place to visit. This region is also famous for the 3 fresh water springs.
It is a trekking route located at an altitude of 3500 m. It is 11 km from Patnitop. It is a day's trek from the place. Trekking equipment is available in shops in Kud or Jammu.
The Naag (Cobra) Temple:
It is believed to be the oldest place in Patnitop about 600 years old. It has a legend of witnessing the marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. It is situated near Mantalai at Krimchi. The place remains mobbed with people during Naag Panchami Festival.
A haven for adventure sports, it is located at a distance of 17km from the town. The green meadows, pastures and gentle slopes are apt for parasailing and paragliding giving an adrenaline rush bang on. Golf courses are also present in the region.
Located on the Udhampur-Srinagar highway about 32 km from Udhampur, it is an important area committee. It has an average altitude of 1855m. Kud is famous for its sweet shops that prepare hot and fresh patisa, which is very popular.
located on Udhampur-Srinagar highway at an elevation of 2006m, it offers a complete mix of Dogri and Kashmiri culture. Overlooking the river Chenab, this region is famous for high quality kidney beans or rajma. Other destinations to visit over are Sudh Mahadev Gaurikund, Bahu Fort and Temple, Chinar Garden and Amarnath Temple.
When to Visit
Although Patnitop is an anytime place but the best time to visit is summer May to June and in autumn, September-October. If seeking snowboard days, December to March is the best time.
Patnitop offers a large number of huts and tourist bungalows, which are managed by state run Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Development Tourism Corporation (JKTDC)
How to Reach
Jammu is the nearest airport at a distance of 115km and is well-connected with major cities.
The nearest railway stations are Jammu Tawi and Udhampur and serves at all prime locations.
Located at NH-1A, Patnitop can be easily accessed by bus and taxis. The JKTDC operates various luxury buses.
