Previously known as Gaurimarg, this majestic hill station lies in the district of Jammu & Kashmir in India. Located at an elevation of 2730 m, Gulmarg is a scenic picnic spot. Owing to its lush green backdrop, blooming gardens, gorgeous landscapes, pleasant weather and tranquil lakes, Gulmarg beckons hoards of tourists and holidaymakers. The main reason, tourists throng to the place is the off-piste skiing and snowboarding. The slopes of the hill town make it Asia's only heli-skiing resort.
This intriguing hill station used to be the leisure resort for kings and royal family. It also served as a summer retreat for British officers during their rule in India. History says that Mughal Emperor Jehangir was a regular visitor to the environment. The name was given by Yousuf Shah Chak, the former king, who frequently visited the place.
Tourist Attractions in Gulmarg
This small valley is the site for winter ski runs in Gulmarg. Bejewelled with flowers in the spring, the meadow provides tourists the opportunity to see the gorgeous views of the enveloping peaks and the Kashmir valley.
Known as the Gondola Ride, the Cable Car Ride is another amazing attraction in Gulmarg. The ride is categorized into two sections- Gulmarg to Kongdori and from there to Apherwat. The Gondola goes through the pine forests, starting from an elevation of 2690 m above sea level and goes up to 3090 m while reaching Kongdoor. The breathtaking views of the green hilly terrains and the spectacular views of the beautiful surroundings offer a wonderful experience to tourists. The ride also passes by Khilanmarg, the famous scenic spot in Gulmarg.
Situated beyond Khilamarg, the Alpather Lake remains frozen till mid-June. This triangular-shaped lake boasts of having a backdrop of the spectacular snow-enveloped terrains. In summers, the lake consists rivulets of clear water along with floating ice pieces.
Baba Rashi Shrine
This Muslim shrine is located on the slopes below the hill station and can be accessed from either Gulmarg or Tangmarg. The Ziarat (tomb) belongs to a famous Muslim saint who passes away at the spot in 1480. Before abstaining from the worldly ways he used to be the courtier of the Kashmir King Zain-ul-Abidin. Hoards of pilgrims visit the shrine every year.
Gulmarg Biosphere Reserve
The spot is a delight for bird watchers. Numerous resident and migratory birds can be found in the reserve. Snow Cock, Vultures, Pheasants, Blue Rock Pigeon, Jungle Crow and European Hoopoe and other radiant birds can be seen here.

From November to February and from May to September.

Srinagar Airport is the nearest one, lying around 56 km away from Gulmarg hill station.
