Ayurveda the Slice of Life
The Indian Ayurveda is the art of healing and living a healthy life. It is said to have been originated in India about 5000 years ago. Ayurveda in India the science of life, the origin of most forms of natural and alternative medicine has its mention in The Rig Veda. "The three- body, mind and soul- are like a tripod, the world stand by their combination; in them everything abides. It is the subject matter of Ayurveda for which the teachings of Ayurveda have been revealed. Ayurveda in India has always sought to prepare mankind for the realization of the full potential of its self through a integration. A comprehensive health care is what this medicine prescribes for the ultimate self-realization. Ayurveda is not only limited to body or physical symptoms but also gives a comprehensive knowledge about spiritual, mental and social psychosomatic health. Thus Ayurveda is a qualitative, holistic science of health and longevity, a philosophy and system of healing the whole person, body and mind.
Ayurveda bestows us with the knowledge of how to prevent disease and how to eliminate its root cause if it does occur. According to Ayurveda, each person will be influenced by certain elements more than others. This is because of their natural constitution. Ayurveda categorizes the different constitutions into three different doshas:
- Vata Dosha, in which the air and space elements dominate
- Pitta Dosha, in which the fire element dominates
- Kapha Dosha, in which the earth and water elements dominate
By understanding the qualities of our natural constitution, we are better able to do what is needed to keep ourselves in balance. Ayurveda has an effective tool for the diagnosis of disease called pulse diagnosis. By placing their finger on your wrist, an Ayurvedic doctor can easily detect the imbalances in the body and prescribe an effective treatment. Treatments usually come in two forms:1) Panchkarama - a 5 pronged body purification program; 2) Herbal medicines to balance the body. Ayurvedic treatments have absolutely no negative side effects.
There are mainly 2 objectives of Ayurveda. The first is to maintain the health of those who are well. This entails specific diet and nutrition, hygiene, living habits, exercises and stabilizing techniques. Following these guidelines enables a healthy person to maintain health and increase their life-span. The other is to cure diseases of those who are sick. This aspect relates to various diseases, their causes, diagnosis, remedies and therapies to cure and prevent relapses of illness.
