Enjoying its status as one of the most loved beaches in the ultimate holiday destination, Goa, Anjuna Beach attracts huge number of crowds for as long as one can remember. The simple, fuss-free setting, the hippie vibe and the 'Never Say Die' spirit enchants travellers who love to relax and make merry. The influence of trance music and night trance parties only adds to its appeal to the tourists.
Originally a part of Portuguese seize in India during 15th century, it was not until the 1960s when Anjuna village and the beach got its hippie culture. The credit, of course, goes to a hippie from America who has now become legendary in his own right, Eight Finger Eddie.
The remarkable thing about the beach is that at first look, Anjuna is not the prettiest of beaches around. Rather, it has a simple look as any other beach with huge rocks scattered across the shore and sea. However, it's the eventful life at the beach that keeps everyone hooked to it.
Unlike other commercial beaches, you would not find strings of hawkers to disturb you or sports operator and shack-owners approaching you now and then. Travellers can just be themselves and do what pleases them while soaking in the scenic beauty and healthy tan.
Wednesday flea market is the main highlight of the place, as is their infamous trance parties after sun down. The market started as a casual initiative by the hippies in order to encourage barter trade for travel. Today, it stands tall as one of the biggest flea markets in India with anything and everything from across the country at one single place. The market starts at dawn and continues until dusk with large number of tourists hoarding the stalls to get a good bargain.
