Elephant Festival- Exhibiting Royalty of Jaipur
The city of Jaipur breaks into an ecstatic gala of life, when the famous Elephant Festival approaches. It can be considered as a pre-Holi bash that revolves around Elephants. Though camel dominates the state but if talk about royalty of Rajputs, the elephant wins the crown. Beautifully adorned elephants are the centre of attractions and draw a huge number of tourists from all over the world.
This day-long festival takes place on the occasion of Holi eve to commence the Holi celebrations.
Conducted every year by the Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation, the Elephant Festival takes place at the Chaugan stadium in Jaipur.
Elephants have always been served as a carrier of royalty in the culture of India and the Elephant Festival was started to celebrate this royal animal as Bikaner celebrated the ship of the Desert.
The festival gets started with a traditional procession of adorned elephants along with the folk tunes, played by musicians. The procession moves on through the streets of Jaipur towards the stadium. The elephants insolently parade up and down, which recreates the scenes from the royal past. An appreciative crowd enjoys this fascinating spectacle. Only female elephants participate in this festival.
Elephant festival in Jaipur is not just about elephant parade. It includes several other features that attract visitors to be the onlookers of the event. Elephant beauty contests, tug-of-war, folk dances are the regular events that entertain tourists. Playing Holi sitting on elephants' back is another highlight, which enables you to enjoy a liberal splashing of colours in a different way. Performances of folk dancers add more charm to the atmosphere. In the evening, fireworks fill the sky and create a beautiful spectacle.
