Introduction

The history of the Red Fort goes back to the centuries of the Mughals. The construction was initiated by Shahjahan in 1639 and it is built around the Yamuna River to feed the moat built along the fort. Popularly known as the Lal Qila, it is the significant link for the Prime Minister of India addresses the audience from here on the Independence Day. The construction of the fort in Red Sandstone in large scale gives it the name of Red Fort. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, history of Red Fort Delhi reveals that numerous sections and buildings were built in the fort according to the specific functions and needs in mind.

The fort is the perfect representation of Mughal architecture. The art work of the fort is a utopian synthesis of Persian, Indian and European style. It is believed that the reputed Kohinoor Diamond is a part of the furniture here. The main attraction of the fort is its massive walls; the wall has 2 entrances- The Lahore Gate and the Delhi Gate. The important structures in the fort are Lahore gate, Diwan I Aam, Diwan I Khas and Moti Masjid.

Light and Sound show

Every evening here, there is an astounding display of history and events of Delhi in the form of light and sound show. It is a one hour exposition shown in Hindi and English language. The entry ticket is suitably priced for adults and children and varies on weekends and public holidays.


Best Time to Visit

The visiting hours of the fort are from 9:30 A.M to 4:30 P.M daily except on MONDAYS. However evening is the best time to visit when you can enjoy the light and sound show. The entry tickets of the fort are charged different for Indian nationals and Foreigners.

There are best and famous shopping options which are Chandni Chowk, Meena Bazaar and Chawdi Bazaar. Chandni Chowk is one of the ancient and India's biggest wholesale markets. How to Reach

Red Fort is located in Chandni Chowk on Netaji Subhash road. One can take the metro to Chawdi Bazaar and then an auto or a rickshaw. From Delhi Airport it is at a distance of 19 km. One can also commute by taxis and buses according to one's preference.
