Introduction

Initially called the All India War Memorial, India Gate is counted amongst the largest war memorials in India. It is one of the 1st gates to be constructed in Delhi. It is located in the Rajpath. It was made by Edwin Lutyens in 1921. This landmark in Delhi commemorates the members of the British Indian Army- 80000 Indian soldiers who sacrificed their lives fighting for their live in the Afghan war and World War. Situated at the end of Rajpath it is 42 m high and is a popular picnic spot.

Architectural Design of India Gate

The foundation stone of the structure was laid by the Duke of Connaught in 1921. The building rises in stages on the base of Bharatpur Red Stone. On having a closer look at the gate, one can find the names of the soldiers inscribed on the walls along with the winners of the Param Veer Chakra Award. The frame is inscribed with the Imperial suns while both sides of the arch have INDIA, flanked by the dates 1914 in the left and 1919 in the right.

Amar Jawan Jyoti
It represents the flame of the immortal warrior; the shrine is made of black marble with a rifle on its barrel. Amar Jawan Jyoti is burning since 1971.

Every year on 26th January, the republic day parade is held here that comprises of marching contingent, tanks and weaponry, folk dances and school children from all over India participate in this colorful ceremony.

How to Reach

To reach the India Gate, you can fly down to the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi. You can either avail of local buses from various points or hire auto-rickshaws and taxis or take the metro rail. The nearest Metro station is Central Secretariat.
